It is somewhat true that the more intelligent kids tend to gravitate towards chess. But modern research has shown that it does not matter if a child has been previously exposed to chess, and only four months of chess training can significantly increase their overall IQ. Aside from that, chess has a number of other benefits essential to a child's growth: The game brings people together, teaches how to win and lose, helps children to realize the consequences of their actions, can help focus, obvious educational tools, develops creativity, builds confidence, and develops problem solving skills.
