What is closing the gap?
Closing the Gap is a Summer education program that is run by Director Cheryl Simmons. This program serves youth grades K-5. It truly does exactly what it says in the name, it allows kids continue to use their brain through the Summer months, and not miss a beat going into the next school year. Not only that, but it helps young students advance their knowledge. As Mrs. Simmons says it, "It gives a child a chance to go from the top bottom half of his class, and move up to the bottom of the top." It is a pretty big confidence booster for children to be able to grasp onto to an educational concept that was difficult for them before.
There are four teachers, that teach in four different classrooms. All teachers associated with Closing the Gap are licensed teachers, and are hand picked by Cheryl Simmons and Executive Director of Carver. Assigned to each teacher are two skilled paraprofessionals.
The program typically operates beginning in the month of June through to early July. Date varies from year to year, however, postings and updates will be made on social media and on website.
Hours of operation in the Summertime starting in June are 9a-12p.

A few words from founder and director Mrs. Cheryl Simmons
Thirty years ago, Sycamore School helped us begin a summer learning program. Our program 'Closing the Gap' for the last 10 years has been housed at Carver Community Center and serves students who have completed Kindergarten to 5th grade. This program takes place in June and early July, and it has been tremendously successful in helping students who are behind in their learning. This programs allows students to review previous years material and fill any gaps in their learning. Students who have mastered the material taught during the school year benefit because the review prevents major learning loss, and have a chance to begin learning ahead. Each class is taught by highly qualified state licensed teachers, and there are two trained teacher's assistants in each class. Math, math facts, reading skills, language, writing, and STEM are taught at the grade appropriate level. Each class is limited to 15 students. There are entrance and exit assessments that are given to evaluate growth, and Praise be to God in the near 30 year history, only 3 students have fallen behind. We look to continue to build on that success.
